Going backpacking at 6 months old strapped to my father’s back, it’s natural to say I have had a lifetime of experiences in the outdoors. Growing up in a small town, playing in the woods and making shelters, I dreamt of someday walking off into the mountains with just a knife to survive. While it may have taken me longer than expected, I have finally done just that...
You can now find me teaching wilderness and primitive living skills at gatherings around the country where I welcome folks from all walks of life on trips into the backcountry – sharing that magical connection that only the wilderness can offer. I also delve into the world of Energy Medicine work and supplement treatments for suffering patients with hand-foraged, wild-crafted herbal remedies and flower essences.
My home is a 30′ off-grid yurt deep in the woods, not connected to anything. I am completely surrounded and supported by the natural world: water comes from the sky; warmth from the trees; food and medicine from the plants and wildlife; all “waste” is composted and returned to the forest to be recycled. In this rustic backdrop, when I'm not out playing or teaching, I enjoy a myriad of crafting projects like tanning hides, buckskin sewing, drum making, basketry, and felting. You may also find me out backpacking, kayaking, snowboarding, or practicing my archery.
ALONE IS THE MOST INTENSE SURVIVAL SERIES ON TELEVISION. NO CAMERA CREWS. NO GIMMICKS. IT IS THE ULTIMATE TEST OF HUMAN WILL.
It's safe to say I have been training for Alone my whole life. From my off grid home to my vacations spent on wilderness adventures – everything I do is with the intent to see how spiritually deep I can connect with the land.
Want to see how I faired? You'll have to watch for yourself, no spoilers here!
Just before going out on Alone, Karie purchased 13 acres of raw land in her hometown of Sandpoint, Idaho. Finally her dream of having her own wilderness school came to life. However, the site is bare with the exception of her old home, the yurt, which she has donated to the school. She is raising funds to build the necessary infrastructure to support the school and its instructors. Please consider supporting Karie by visiting her go-fund-me page and making a donation!
